The AutoLetter visual editor is your main tool for designing professional letter templates -- no design skills required. In this article, you'll learn how to create your first template step by step.
Navigate to the Templates menu item in your AutoLetter dashboard. Here you'll see an overview of all your existing templates.
Click the New Template button. You'll be asked whether you want to use the visual editor or upload a finished PDF. Select the visual editor.
Give your template a descriptive name, e.g., "Welcome Letter Q1 2026" or "Win-back Existing Customers." The name helps you find it later.
You have two options:
Use the toolbar to place elements on your template:
For a quick start, you can also insert ready-made building blocks from the Element Library. There you'll find 6 categories with pre-made elements like dividers, badges, call-to-action buttons, frames, and stamps.
In the background panel, you can set a background color (12 presets or custom color) or a gradient (linear or radial, 2-5 color stops). Six gradient presets are available.
Enable the DHL zone overlay in the editor to make sure that the reserved areas for sender, postage, and recipient on page 1 remain clear. Content in these zones will cause validation errors.
Click Save. AutoLetter automatically checks your template for compliance with DHL print requirements and shows you any issues.
The editor automatically saves your changes in the browser. If your browser closes unexpectedly, you'll be offered to restore the last draft when you next open the editor.
Use keyboard shortcuts in the editor to work faster. Press Ctrl+Z to undo changes and Ctrl+S to save manually.
